10.04.2015 What is CBT?

You can ride a scooter a whole year earlier than you can drive a car – when you’re only 16. Once you’ve got a provisional licence, the first step is to complete something called Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

“I owe my participation in this great sport to my step-dad Ken,” says double World Superbike Champion James Toseland. “He was really into his bikes and used to take me for rides on the back of his machine. I loved it and when I was nine he got me my first bike, a TY80 Yamaha.”

What? CBT includes five sections of skills. You start on a course and then move on to roads. The CBT costs around £100.

Why? Once you’ve completed CBT – and got your DL196 certificate to prove it – you can ride on roads, though not with passengers, and not on motorways. You then have two years to pass the full theory and practical tests and get your full licence. Take any longer and you’ll have to take the CBT all over again.

How? Look for an approved training body (ATB) and instructor approved by the DSA. Some ATBs loan bikes and helmets if you don’t have your own.
