10.04.2015 Learning with a disability

*

If you have a disability you need to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) by filling in a medical questionnaire when you apply for your provisional licence.

The usual minimum age for learning to drive is 17, but if you get the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you can start learning when you’re 16. And if you’re between 16 and 24, you might qualify for some dosh towards the cost of a suitable car and driving lessons, from Motability.

It might be a good idea to choose a driving instructor with experience or specialist knowledge of your needs. These instructors can teach stuff like how to get in and out of the car more easily, how to get a wheelchair in and out of a car and also how to operate adapted controls. Some driving instructors will have hand controls fitted to their cars instead of pedals.
